Communication Skill Anyone?
March 1st, 2010
What is this thing called Communication Skill? And what do you do with it when you have it?
What follows could answer these and perhaps other questions you might have about communication.
First things first: what is Communication skill?
Do you have thoughts, ideas, concerns or even passions that you want to communicate to other people? And do you want to do it in such a way that they can clearly understand what you’re saying, what you’re trying to get across?
If this sounds simple, read on. Because in reality, although this seems like an easy task, many people are not able to carry it out. This in turn leads to many the problems we see in the world today.
You may now be wondering what gets in the way of communicating effectively.
You may even believe that communication is difficult. And this is not your fault because your parents and at school you may not have been told just how important communication skill is. Possibly because they didn’t know it either and couldn’t teach you.
I’ve been there too…
I was a gawky fool that had a speech impediment, until I found a way to get my message across. Clearly, so that there were no more misunderstandings.
How did I do this? How do you get communication skill?
Here are some things you can do. And yes, you actually have to do something (it’s not easy, I know. But you’ll feel much more confident about yourself when you’ve done it).
The most important thing is to work out why in the world you want to improve your communication skills. What is it about your current communication skill level that doesn’t get you quite what you want? Perhaps you want that new job? Or perhaps you want to be with this gorgeous girl or that exciting guy? Or maybe it’s simply that you want to get on with your children better. These are all valid things that you may want. And there are probably many more that are unique to you.
There are two ways you could look at it. The first one is: What Do You Want? Do you want to be more confident? Do you want to be the life and sould of the party? Do you want to be the expert or even the boss?
The other way to look at it is: What Do You Don’t Want? Is it that you don’t want to feel shy or lonely? Is it that you don’t want to be at the outside of a party waiting that someone comes over and talks to you? Perhaps you don’t even get invited to the party?
Because when you improve your communication skills, the added bonus is that you feel much more confident about talking to people. And when you’re more confident with people you’re more confident in other areas as well.
The next thing you can do after you’ve worked out why you want to improve your communication skills is to make an action plan.
One of the things you could do and that cost next to nothing is go to your library, get a stack of books on communication skill and take them home. THEN READ THEM!
Yes, you need to read them and take all the tips and tricks they show you and put them into practice.
This is the secret of the most successful people in the world.
THEY ACTUALLY TAKE ACTION AND DO STUFF!
Do you want to be like one of those that never even take the cellophane off of the things they buy in bookstores? Because doing nothing changes nothing.
Now, because you’ve been reading this far I presume you’re not one of those people.
Because I would hate to think that I’ve been investing all this energy writing this and you’re not reading it. I would hate it even more if you read this and then not take action. And because you don’t strike me as being that type of person let’s carry on.
Where were we? Ah yes, improving your communication skill.
It won’t take more than a weekend for you to get through the books, DVD or CDs you got from the library. Reading, watching, listening… whatever works best for is fine.
There’re two more things that will make this work better. The first is: Make notes as you go through the material. Simple. Pull out the things that interest you most and jot them down. This way you will remember them better. In fact around 27% better. How cool is that?
The second thing is (and this is really really important): practice what you learn. Every day. Make a daily schedule and stick to it like glue.
Did you know that every successful person practices every day? Without fail? Yes, it’s a fact. Only with practice will you improve.
And here’s the thing.
You don’t have to tell anybody about all your practising. You can practice somewhere quiet until you’ve mastered any one communication skill and are confident enough to go out into the world with it.
Go out and get what you want. If you need to, it’s fine to re-read the first part of this article.
And remember: congratulate yourself for taking action. Because, unlike most people, you’re getting off your butt and actually doing something that will make your life better.
So, take action and get your communication skill.
I’d love to learn how you’re getting on. So, let me know and put a comment below this post.
And remember: be gentle to yourself, even if you don’t get straight away what you want. There are only two results that are worth taking note of. One is success. The other one is feedback on what you can improve to be successful.
