Get yourself a book on etiquette, see if you are doing as it says. You might also want to read something in the area of behavior patterns.
References :
Sit back and observe people, such as a mall (yeah, not really a great place to see "normal" people ;) but good facial expressions), or at a city event, such as a festival. Also, explain to your friends the emotions you feel about not knowing what to do in certain situations, they can try to guide you into the right expression or thought. I often watch my friends faces closely when we are together, but I am not a part of a particular conversation, to see how they react with each other, then at home I replay it in my mind, and in front of a mirror, practice the facial moves they did, and try to "match" the facial expression with how I should feel.
References :
I have had ADD since childhood and have a hard time knowing how I am supposed to feel, as I can't "read" social cues by others mannerisms and facial expressions.

There are some some games you can do, that are helpful and seem to work for others with this condition.

You go to a public place with friend, and try to guess, based on body language...what each person is saying to the other.
A park with children if a fun place to do this. You can also do this with the television, if you turn off the sound.
References :
former Teachers Aide Special Ed

My son has Asperger's, which is very close. He has learned social cues. We do a lot of role play with him. He is a good actor, so he just thinks of it as a play.
References :
Even if you only have a few friends you can improve your social skills. At worse you might need some one to go with you and then point out at the end of the day where thing went wrong, and then role play them.

You may never be the most popular person but you should be able to enjoy socializing in small groups.
References :
Can I suggest you speak to psychologist on this..they're trained in giving you advice. I actually did a presentation on NLD last semester in college. You have a very difficult task, and need some guiding with a trained professional. If money is an issue, you should research. See how people with NLD react with others.
References :
Can a person with Non Verbal Learning Disablity learn social skills?
I was recently diagnosed with NLD as an adult and was told that people with this disorder have trouble interacting socially because we don't always pick up on non-verbal cues. Can anyone give me some tips on how to improve my social skills so that I can communicate with people without them thinking I am a weirdo or not interested in what they are saying? I also have ADD and sensory integration issues that were diagnosed when I was a child.
Jackie, thanks for the advice, but I am currently seeing a psychiatrist. I was just wondering if anyone out there had any other tips.
