People sometimes ask me: “Tell me, what are interpersonal skills?”

I think one of the reasons they ask is that interpersonal skills are skills we use when we interact with people, and that there are so many different ways to interact that it’s difficult to define.

My take on this is that when our interaction with others gives us the result we want, and it gives the other person the result they want, we used our interpersonal skills successfully. I always aim at a win-win in any situation I’m in.

The thing is that we all have interpersonal skills. As we grow up and learn how to communicate with others, we learn ways to communicate and deal with people that are better than other ways.

Interpersonal skills have a lot to do with communication skills. That is because when we interact with others, we always communicate. These are skills we use every day. The question now is, are you using these skills in a way that creates more harmony between you and others?

Are you using these skills so that you and the other person get the results you want? I would call interpersonal skills relationship building skills. Because when we are with other people, we relate to them. And here, the question is: how well are you relating to other people?

There’s always room to improve your interpersonal skills, your communication skills, and your relationship building skills. And the better your interpersonal skills the more successful you are in your personal and professional life.

Do you know how to create that feeling of trust and understanding that we all crave from others?

Do know how to express your own needs so that the other person doesn’t feel attacked?

Do you know how to give emotional support to someone else, and in such a way that they can solve their own problem?

Do you know how to settle differences and disagreements so that nobody feels resentful about the outcome?

Interpersonal skills include assertiveness skills, listening skills, conflict resolution skills, problem solving skills. The most important skill though, in my opinion, is creating an atmosphere of mutual trust, respect and understanding. This skill alone allows you to get the other person to cooperate with you. It allows you to get what you want in such a way that the other person doesn’t feel resentful. Because when you do it right the other person gets what they want too. A real win-win…!

Communication is usually seen as an exchange between two persons to relay and receive messages. Good communication skills are needed to make this exchange an effective one. When one is in the process of constructing his thoughts into words and then putting them in his mouth to be brought to the receptor’s ears, there are certain factors that can greatly affect the message delivered. These are mental and communication patterns that one employs to attain a particular effect.

Such patterns are what you call interpersonal skills. Put plainly, this is how one can relate to others. These are important in an organizational point of view because these can reflect a person’s ability to interact with others. These skills may also be needed in different scenarios, may it be a formal setting or a casual one.

Having positive interpersonal skills instead of the negative ones can help a person by having better socialization with others. In most cases, these can bring about comfortable conversations with others. If one is good at relating with others in a difficult situation, he does not let his emotions take over. Instead, his feelings are controlled, allowing him to react professionally in such a case. Thus, the whole organization also benefits by the minimal occurrence of conflicts.

Its importance can also be stressed at how people can see and perceive a person, which could ultimately affect everyday living and future goals. It is then more essential to be able to deal effectively with the people you are surrounded with than merely having great ideas alone. Fortunately though, one cannot be doomed for being unskilled in relating interpersonally. One can always have room for improvement, as they always say.

To start improving communication skills, one has to be friendly when around other people. Smile as often as you could. This brings about a good aura, and people like to surround themselves with positive energy. There are very few people who spend their time with others who wallow in misery, so practice smiling a lot. Using humor will prove to be an effective tool as well.

In addition, appreciating the little things that others do for you will also help. Find little word that can encourage, praise, thank, and welcome people. Make an effort to let people know that they are greatly appreciated. Don’t forget to pay attention to them as well and keep an eye contact when communicating. You might be very busy and all, but you can still return attention with active listening.

Furthermore, it would also be a good thing to be that person who brings everyone together. This would create a harmonious environment where people are motivated enough not to make conflicts with others and not to talk behind each others’ backs. It would also bring about a sense of trust and confidence with each other.

With this, you should also communicate what you have to say clearly. Avoid being obscure to avoid misunderstandings. Speaking of communicating effectively, you also have to be empathic. This can be achieved by keeping in touch with both your emotions and others as well. This way, you would be in a better position to understand what is going on with others.

If one starts doing the little practices mentioned, his interpersonal capacities will greatly improve, thus making a great leap toward better communication skills. So start early on for a better you and make the world a tad better place to work and live in.

A Cut Above: You Could Become a Stylist to the Stars

Making it to the red carpet is one of the ultimate goals of celebrities in Hollywood and in the music industry. What they wear and how they wear it as they walk down the ultimate fashion gauntlet will grace the covers of People, E, and In Touch plus eliciting commentary from everyone from Joan Rivers to Ryan Seacrest. But who is behind these looks? Where did they start? How did they start? How can you become one of these style-makers?

Cosmetology is more than donning a smock and handling a pair of shears. If you’re looking into a career in cosmetology, the best path to success involves keeping up with changing fashions, training at an accredited beauty school, getting your cosmetology license, learning and mastering the business development skills required to grow and maintain your client base. And, of equal importance, you need to make a commitment to lifelong learning by taking advanced, continuing education courses.

Defining Hair Fashions

Keeping up with the current fashions not only helps a stylist keep up their own personal appearance (it’s important that you, as a stylist, make a good impression on your clients), it also helps to identify current styles to make the best choices for clients. Understanding art and technical design is not just for painters and architects.

Training and Hair Stylist Education

All states require cosmetologists and other personal appearance workers to be licensed, with the exceptions of shampooers and makeup artists. After graduating from a state- approved training program, students are required to take a written test and sometimes a practical or oral test of technical styling skills. Most states also require personal appearance workers, like hair stylists, to be at least 16 years old with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

State-approved training programs can be found in private, post secondary career schools like Salon Success Academies.

Maintaining a Client Base

Career success is also determined by a stylist’s interpersonal skills and attitude. These ‘soft skills’ are so important to maintaining and building your client base that beauty schools require coursework in this area.

By developing these skills and with a little determination, there are many directions you can take with a career as a stylist to the stars. Some work with individual stars, like Ken Paves, who helps celebs like Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez define and re-define their look. Others might choose to work in the fashion or film industry like Kim Kimble, whose career working with A-listers like Beyonce Knowles, Mary J. Blige, and Michelle Williams began by working in the film and TV industries where she started to meet celebrities who became regular clients.

Or, you could take on celeb status yourself, like hair stylist Nick Arrojo. After working in Vidal Sasson salons among others, Arrojo started his own salon, Arrojo Studio. He continues his growth as a style maker by working on his own product line and how-to books. His work can also be seen on The Learning Channel’s (TLC) What Not to Wear.

Once you get the training, it’s up to you where you take it.

To take your first step on the pathway to a new and exciting beauty career, complete the contact form, or call 1-877-987-HAIR (4247).

The IT job market is still one of the hottest markets and commands the highest resume response from job seekers. Given the sheer volume of resumes that a hiring manager has to sift through for each position, only the strongest resumes actually get past the initial 30 second screening. The national average for resumes received for each IT position advertised is 300 and increasing.

1.Make Your Resume Searchable: Using the right keywords is the key for making your IT resume web searchable. It is not enough to mention the skill sets you have, but you must also use them effectively. For example, if ORACLE and VB.NET is your forte, then you should use phrases such as “database programming” and “testing”. Another thing about keywords is that resumes these days are simply being scanned electronically for inclusion into company databases. If you are not using the right IT keywords for the position advertised, your resume may not even see a human being.

2.Choose The Right Format: Although different formats have pros and cons, for IT positions, the functional resume format is ideal for its effectiveness in highlighting your skills and experiences. This saves time for hiring managers and you stand a better chance of getting shortlisted.

3.Emphasize Your Skills: The key to cracking the IT job market is really your skills. Emphasize your skills with short sentences such as “programmer with 8 years experience in COBOL and Oracle, and last three yeas as team leader”. Another example could be “eight projects in 6 years in C++, SAS, HTML, CAD, and TCP/IP”. This also showcases your additional skills in areas such as leadership, management and interpersonal skills (which are sometimes lacking in IT candidates).

4.Avoid Mistakes In Terminology: There are job seekers that still write industry terminology incorrectly, which usually has disastrous consequences on their job search. Example, “data warehousing” is often written as “dataware housing” or worse, “data wearhousing”. Proofread your resume thoroughly, then have a friend do the same.

5.Cut Down Lengthy Paragraphs: Summarizing your resume will definitely score points over writing long paragraphs. You don’t want your extraordinary skills to get lost in a maze of words. Certifications such as MCDBA, MCP+1, & MCSE should be listed in a stand-alone fashion.

6.Highlight Accomplishments. Mention your responsibilities and specific accomplishments in your current position, giving examples of the platforms used for both back-end and front-end operations.

7.Omit Personal Information. Avoid unnecessary personal details; they will only be distractions.

8.Summarize Your Resume At The Top: Summarizing key elements at the top makes more impact and encourages the employer to continue reading. An executive summary, well written, can do an excellent job at keeping the reader engaged.

9.Avoid The Temptation To Overdo: Treat your resume as your calling card. You must be able to substantiate everything that you have written. For example, if you are applying for an Oracle Financial position when your specialty is really database management, you will be exposed. Additionally, you will lose your chance to be considered for any other position that the employer may have available.

10. Proofread The Resume: Nix grammatical and spelling errors. There is no excuse for typos or misspellings in a resume. Because IT resumes have highly technical words, you have to proofread them more closely.

Getting your resume just right for the initial shortlisting is not hard if you stick to IT resume writing basics. By following these 10 tips, you will be able to write and market your IT resume successfully and land that job.

Preparation is everything in life and as well in preparation for job interviews. You may think that it is fine to “run by the seat of your pants.” In your mind it may even be admirable.

However employers and your prospective employer who is sitting across the desk or hotel room at you may not. A major component of fire departments is to prevent rather than fight fires. Preparation and planning shows an employee with traits and skills that they admire and hire. You may think that it is just great to do things at the last moment.

However have you ever considered the extra effort and meager results that usually results? By waiting to the last moment you are severely limiting both your options as well as your success rate.

A major way to demonstrate your planning skills as well as your ability to implement your plans is to do an in-depth investigation of the company that you are planning to work for. In the end you should know more about the company – its strengths, shortcomings, goals, customers and products than even the person interviewing you.

What questions should you focus on in your research?

First of course what is the ownership of the company, Is it privately owned, a public company on the stock exchange or a government institution. Public companies have a wealth of information available from your stock broker, online or at your public library.

Private companies are somewhat more guarded. You can shine in your research skills here. Again online searches and the public library may be useful. Newspaper searches or clippings again at the library may also yield results. Seeks out customers and even competitors for your targeted company. After all who knows better about the sales and problems of the aspirin company than the salesman of the competitive product Tylenol?

Government organizations present a challenge in that some information is available and even more is supposed to available but may be well be shielded from public view by a possessive protective beauracy. Again your research and interpersonal skills and contacts come into play.

Find out what the main stated goals of the organization are. Is this consistent with their appararent actions and direction. Consistency down the line is important. The captain may be sailing in one direction yet the staff is paddling like mad in another direction to stay out of harms way.

Prepare for questions as to what skills, education, experience and knowledge you will bring to the organization. It is important that this meshes with the job position.

The employer may well ask you what salary you are asking. Again research industry standards in that particular field. Total salary including benefits, bonuses and perks are what count.

Be prepared to discuss ongoing concerns in the specific field and industry involved as well as current trends. Ongoing educational needs in the field, particular field and the firm are important.

Finally at the end of the interview it is always best to ask for feedback. Are there any questions not covered? Are there areas for improvement in your presentation, education or skills? Assuming you are successfully hired what areas of emphasis should you have – training, skill development and personal development?

It is said that those that do not plan plan to fail. Don’t fall in that trap. Be proactive. Plan and follow through. Woody Allen’s comment that “95 % of life is just showing up” is more than appropriate. However it must be stressed – show up fully prepared.

These days, more and more students are choosing to go to University. A wider range of degrees are obtainable, and more financial help is readily available. Unfortunately, this means there is more competition for degree level jobs, and it is becoming increasingly necessary for students to become more proactive and use their university time to gain more than just a degree.

The first step that will be useful for most students is to prepare a CV. Most institutions have CV building software available, or there are some free programs online. Look at good examples of CV’s online, and make sure yours sells you the best it possibly can. Think about how your lecturers would describe you, your biggest achievements, and where you want to be in five years time. Incorporate all of this into your writing. Save frequently, and spend a few hours making the best CV possible. This is very worth it, as it should now only be necessary to tweak certain points, you may never need to do a full rewrite.

The next step is to start buying job papers, looking at boards or looking online for work. Whether you need a job now, or you are just browsing, the process of looking, applying for and attending interviews is something that you need to learn and become skilful at. When you finish university, you will need to find a job, so practising now will ensure you have the best answers to the questions you’ll be asked, and you will have the confidence to make a brilliant first impression. If you’re looking at your CV and thinking that there isn’t much there, it’s time to get some new skills.

Team work, leadership and organisational skills are all very easy to gain while at university. Joining a sports team is a brilliant way, and shows potential employers that you are fit, healthy and energetic, as well as capable of working in a team and being driven to succeed. You could also apply to be on a committee, and play a part in making serious decisions for a good cause. This offers you the chance to experience independent responsibility and let you take charge. You could also help boost your organizational skills by getting involved in organizing shows or nights out for members.

Communication and Interpersonal skills are also just as easy to gain. Most universities already encourage this by asking students to write essays to a word count, which means you have to gather information, facts and main points, and express them in as few words as possible, but still in a coherent and well supported argument. To develop this further, you could try and get involved with a newspaper, magazine or even a radio station at your university. Again, joining a committee is an excellent way to meeting people and building on communication and personal skills.

Time management is also a useful skill. Practise working towards deadlines in a sensible manner. Do your course reading when it is set and make sure you have time to plan, write, proofread and edit your essay before you have to give it in. Schedule revision sessions before exams so that you don’t have to cram information the night before. All of these will help you to both gain a higher mark and learn to manage your time better, which will be necessary in a working environment.

Remember that you need to be realistic and work towards giving yourself more than just a degree to make you attractive to employers. Any extra skills and experience you can add to a job role will make you seem like a more suitable candidate, and may even boost the salary the company are willing to pay! Look at what’s available and choose some extra activities too – you should make the most of your time at university.

The explosion of the information technology world has created a need for highly skilled workers able to handle heavy programming and tight network security. Every end of the spectrum in the computer world now requires in depth training and knowledge to be able to meet the demands of a computerized civilization. Communications, databases and the number of computer networks mean that anyone breaking into the job market with the hopes of working with technology needs certified qualifications and solid skills to be a contender. Competition for employment is stiff and only those with proper knowledge will get into massive corporations or important jobs. Of course, basic training in PC repair will solidify a long term job for you in a computer store, but with the opportunity to expand your skills into something far more valuable, why limit yourself rather than specializing in programming, video game design or software development?

Working in the technological industry can be very good, as employment conditions are favourable. Most working hours are set at 40 hours per week, geared to when the maximum number of employees are using the networking system or tapping into the administrative database. Also, thanks to that same technology you would be studying, someone with an IT degree can easily work from home and provide the same service to their employer as they would on site. There are, however, some drawbacks to working in an IT environment: emergency situations such as viruses, massive backups or network repairs, or meeting a certain deadline can mean longer hours in the evening or on weekends, though usually not on a regular basis.

Technology changes rapidly and pressure to excel at skills does mean that those who work in the industry must always be continually updating their skills or learning new ones as developments occur. Of course, a secure, long term job position can mean that recycling skills may not be necessary, but should your IT employment with one company come to an end, you may find that you no longer have the qualifications to be competitive in the job market when searching for a new employer. For sure, businesses today nearly always only hire people with IT degrees and anyone lacking that certification won’t be able to find a job, no matter how skilled or talented they are.

There’s more reason to invest in achieving an IT degree. The job prospectus for someone with high skills and abilities is very good, and the public’s desire for bigger, better, and more will continue to push companies to develop new software and find solutions to make individual’s lives easier or more productive. Computer scientists and database administrators are predicted to be the fastest growing market for those with an IT degree, so specialization in those areas will ensure that you’ll be quickly employed at a good salary. However, even without specialization, most people with an IT degree will land jobs, as companies are also looking for people with a wide range of knowledge, including interpersonal and business skills. Spreading out can make you just as valuable as specialization.

An IT degree provides you with the training so that you’ll become a valuable asset to any company. Indeed, most businesses today seek out top students and professionals with certification from the best educational institutions to help them protect their valuable data and keep their computer network functioning at its optimal potential. The starting salary for someone with solid skills and certification begins somewhere around $60,000 and only goes upwards from there. Your investment in an IT degree will certainly pay itself back many times, and you’ll be able to break into a rising area of employment opportunities that will have you set for life.

The IT job market can be regarded as a market which has constantly changing demand for IT skills and IT personnel. The primary reason for this is because as the economy grows and develops employers in various sectors will face changing IT needs. Therefore, IT professionals need to keep abreast of the changing circumstances and work forces within the IT job market. This is imperative if IT job applicants are to be successful in obtaining the most rewarding and suitable IT roles. At the moment, in the IT job market as a whole, there has been a shift in the IT skills demanded from core IT skills to soft IT skills. This implies that IT employers now have a higher demand for IT professionals who have some business skills. So, IT job applicants such as business analysts and project planners who also have good interpersonal/presentation skills are more likely to secure suitable job positions than other professionals.

In the light of this, it does appear that the IT job of the future will place less emphasis on IT skills such as programming and developing and more on business-oriented IT skills.

Since the company was incorporated in 1992, Quanta has been providing the finance and telecommunications sectors with effective recruitment solutions.

Quanta is one recruitment agency which has the specialist knowledge and resources to keep abreast of all the changing employment factors within the IT labor market. One of the reasons for this is because Quanta forms close communications links and partnerships with some of the top IT employers in various industries. This enables Quanta to obtain immediate visibility on new IT roles. More importantly, it allows Quanta to provide fully tailored recruitment solutions to both their corporate and candidate clients. This also suggests that regardless of what shape the IT job of the future assumes, Quanta will be able to meet the demands of employers and job applicants.

Quanta is also one of the few recruitment agencies which provide their candidates with a post-recruitment service. The Quanta candidate care program was specially designed to provide extensive support and guidance to Quanta’s candidate after a job placement has been secured. In terms of the future developments in the IT job market, this program will able to help IT professionals adapt to all changing IT employment requirements. Without a doubt, recruitment agencies like Quanta also have a substantial role to play in regards to shaping the IT job of the future.

The coaching services in the business world are referred to as executive coaching services. Executive coaching marked its existence ever since the first manager produced the first successful team. It revolves around inculcating various talents and skills among the executives, by training and coaching them via new challenging ideas and possibilities. It helps them to develop and grow with the organization. There are several coaching services that provide the executives with the ability to communicate effectively and motivate and establish a relationship with the team. These are remarkable traits that bring out innate values of every individual. The business coaching service is new to the corporate world and it facilitates behavioral and psychological changes in the executives, enhancing their managerial skills. Owing to the increasing demands and pressures of the modern business environment, the demand of executive coaching is also rising.

Types of coaching services for the corporate world:

There are various coaching services that contribute to the development of the business world. They are as follows:

Coaching services to improve skills: Coaching service for the development of skills is designed to enable the executives to learn certain abilities and provide them with several perspectives, concerning management and relationship coordination. These services provide the executives with the ability to handle the new responsibilities, with the implementation of innovative tactics. In addition, it helps refine the existing proficiency of the employees.

Coaching services for overall development: These coaching services aim at enhancing the competencies of the individuals working in the corporate world. The service helps an individual to identify his hidden talents and modify them, according to the needs of the new profile and the crucial challenges that come along with it. In addition to this, it involves refining their speaking and listening skills, cultivating strategic planning, enhancing their time management skills and encouraging participation among subordinates. It not only trains executives to handle newer profiles, by broadening their technical know how, but also enables them to cultivate their interpersonal competence.

Coaching services to enhance performance: Personal ability and the feedback received from the group, combines to form the parameters to evaluate the performance of an executive. Being conversant with the essential technical or academic skills is not enough to execute the work assigned. You need to maintain a positive rapport with teammates and other staff within the organization. Performance is not evaluated on an individual basis, but also the overall performance of the team. Team spirit, rate of work completion and the collective effort of the team, form the key factors that determine the effectiveness of the employees and that of the organization.

Behavioral coaching services: More often than not, when an employee starts climbing the corporate ladder he is often considered arrogant by team members. This perception necessitates the executives to be brave enough to tackle the unnecessary criticism and win over the confidence and support of their colleagues. It is important to build a favorable rapport and assure the employees of their loyalty. These executives need behavioral coaching, to help them plan effective strategies to win over their subordinate staff. It calls for a considerable amount of emotional and mental capability to handle new challenging responsibilities. The program revolves around communication and effective leadership skills.

Transformational coaching services: The transformational coaching services are more personal in their approach, as compared to other coaching services. It analyzes the behavioral aspects of the trainees that hinder their effectiveness. It also evaluates the current behavioral patterns and abilities of employees and designs methodical strategy to improve them at the same time. The coach determines the limiting behavior pattern of the employee and formulates a plan to overcome the drawbacks in an effective manner.

Bang! Bang! My shiny metal cap gun sounded as I fired at the imaginary tribe of Indians invading my suburban Atlanta backyard. Two houses down the street, my childhood friend Shelly cuddled her brand new “Chatty Cathy” baby doll.

Growing up in the 50s, our roles were clear: women gather and nest, and men hunt and fight. I was sure that one day I would go into business, and Shelly would be a stay-at-home mom. Twenty years later, Shelly and I were both in business; I was working in a public relations agency, and Shelly had landed a terrific job in a large accounting firm.

It was the 80s, and to succeed in business, Shelly had to dress and act like a man. Shelly did well in business, but at a cost. She had to mask much of her femininity.

When Shelly’s daughter enters the business world three years from now, she will find a much different working environment than her mother. Business is increasingly embracing those attributes historically attributed to women. Hierarchy is being slowly replaced by teamwork, goals are balanced with process, and relationships are being valued as much as transitions. Feminine energy is slowly forcing masculine extremes toward the middle.

The image of business today is being altered, says futurist Faith Popcorn in her 1996 bestselling book Clicking. “(Business will be) no longer seen as a war to be won by trouncing the competition, but viewed as a complicated mosaic to be developed, one relationship at a time.”

In her book, Popcorn identifies a rising trend for solving business and relational problems with “feminine attributes” such as consensus building, sensitivity, and intuition.

Embracing the Feminine in the Workplace—Add One

She calls this new trend “FemaleThink” but is quick to point out it is not gender specific. FemaleThink may come more naturally to women, but men can master it as well.

Already, studies are showing that women managers are outperforming men in the workplace (Business Week, November 20, 2000). “In fact, it’s becoming evident that the most valuable skills one can have in twenty-first century business are those that women have historically possessed, those having to do with people and process and relationship and connection,” writes Matthew Gilbert in his book Communications Miracles at Work.

A more feminine way of communicating is being embraced in today’s workplace. According to Gilbert, a feminine communication and interaction style includes being:

More process-oriented; more patient; and more likely to see “shades of gray.”

More collaborative; less turf conscious; seeking the “win-win.”

Good listeners, facilitators, and coaches.

Open, sensitive, emotional, and empathetic.

Willing to admit mistakes and express concern and/or sympathy.

Business is increasingly rewarding employees for people skills as much as business skills. The reasons are simple: not only is the rising number of women in business influencing company communication, so is the marketplace. As the competition for the most skilled employees intensifies, smart companies are realizing the importance of interpersonal skills in attracting and retaining employees. In the future, only those companies that reward such communication skills as empathy, authenticity, vulnerability, and mutual empowerment will survive and thrive.

Embracing the Feminine in the Workplace—Add Two

The rising trend of “FemaleThink” doesn’t mean men need to be more like women. If that were to happen, we would be no better off than we were in the 80s when many women felt they had to act like men in order to compete in business. Instead, business is challenging both men and women to seek a stronger balance between inner masculine and feminine energies.

Businesswomen may benefit from training in strategic planning and selling skills, while men in business may benefit from training in such skills as listening, sensitivity to interpersonal differences, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.

Corporate cultures must blend the feminine with the masculine. Decisions must be made, but process must be respected. Connection must be as valued as much as competition. Leadership skills must be complemented by consensus building, and men and women must learn to respect each others’ styles and learn from one another.
